Sidewalks have been a poor second cousin to roads. They are often just attributes of city streets. OpenStreetMap has the potential to change that by enabling pedestrian routing, especially helpful for those with limit mobility. UW's Taskar Center for Accessible Technology leads the effort to provide routing for those with limited mobility. Using OpenStreetMap, the Taskar Center has developed AccessMap.io which allows pedestrian routing taking in considerations of steep elevelation, lack of curb ramps and even use of elevators in public accessible buildings. OSM was chosen because of its flexible data model and quick updates by its mapping community.
